a simple, no-nonsense journaling structure

Opening Thoughts

I personally enjoy having a go-to structure to organize & review my thoughts. I attempted to free-form journal for years without regularity. The format, for me, provides a simple, no-nonsense format to jot down my thoughts so I don’t have to think about “what I should talk about” or “how can I make this useful to myself” and has ultimately led to more entries over time.

I strongly recommend adapting this structure as needed — adoption & consistency of use is what matters most. So, do what works for you. Be free.

LEARN

The Learn section is a place to list things you learned that day. I’m a naturally inquisitive person. Wonder, for me, has always been a driving force of happiness; and, related to that, the learnings that come from it.

I believe that I won’t stop learning until I die. So much so that I often think about myself taking my last breath and in those last moments, I still see myself as a person full of wonder, having learned a lot but more to learn.

This exercise has been useful because when reviewing the things I’ve learned, I’m able to:

  • appreciate how far I’ve come
  • jog my memory

REFLECT

The Reflect section is a place to open up, to list the things you did or what happened that day. I often find myself feeling like I haven’t done enough in one day. The Reflect section is a place for me to find solitude, peace, and realize, I’m really doing a lot & living a fulfilled life.

I prefer writing in bullet points, but by all means, I suggest taking on whatever format works for you.

When reviewing the reflections of days past, they read like a timeline.

GRATITUDE

The Gratitude section is a place to list what you are grateful for. We’re all working hard, we all want more, and at the same time we’ve all been told that we all need to smell the roses.

So, here’s to smelling roses.
